Janet King to return for a third series

ABC is pleased to announce that the critically-acclaimed drama Janet King has been commissioned for a third series.

With the award-winning Marta Dusseldorp reprising her celebrated portrayal of Janet King, the third series is set to go into production later this year.

Produced by Karl Zwicky with Screentime’s Greg Haddrick and the ABC’s Kym Goldsworthy and Alastair McKinnon as executive producers, and Hilary Bonney and Marta Dusseldorp as associate producers, the eight-hour drama will make its on air return in 2017.

ABC TV’s Acting Head of Fiction Alastair McKinnon says: “We are delighted to have audience favourite Marta Dusseldorp bring her immense talents back for a third season of thrilling drama in Janet King, where we have plenty of surprises in store.”

Screentime’s Head of Drama Greg Haddrick says “Janet King has been embraced by audiences and critics alike, and we look forward to her continued quest for justice with an innate ability to unravel the mysteries that lurk beneath a façade of decency.”

Now confirmed from Lawrence Mooney on hit105 this morning. From news.com.au:

Ten should pick it up, tweak it and relaunch it as Dirty Laundry in a late slot after Gogglebox or Have You Been Paying Attention.

Not sure where to post this exactly, but this was being transmitted by the ABC on satellite:

Anyone have any idea what the text at the bottom means? (“I wish I was watched by a camera”)

My (uniformed) guess is that it is a reference to “way back when” the clocks seen on screen were not electronic but a camera pointed at a clock! Same with test cards, break down screens etc. The clocks were not electronically generated and I can recall seeing images of TV stations with a studio camera continually pointed at a breakdown screen in case of any program interruption.

Thanks for that explanation (guess), TV.Cynic – very interesting.

A couple of online articles say that Janet King has been renewed for a third season. Is that confirmed?

If true, that’s a pleasant surprise. Ratings for S2 weren’t great and the ABC has no money.

That would be a yes:

The ABC has less money not no money. It rated better than some recent dramas like Hiding. It’s not just about ratings though. They also take into account sales (overseas, paytv, streaming) and iview watches these days.

###Doctor Thorne

From Sunday 12 June at 8:30pm

Dr Thomas Thorne (Tom Hollander) lives in the village of Greshamsbury in Barsetshire, with his beautiful niece, Mary (Stephanie Martini), a girl blessed with every gift except money.

Mary has grown up alongside the Gresham sisters – Augusta (Gwyneth Keyworth), Beatrice (Nell Barlow) and Alexandrina (Kate O‘Flynn) and their handsome brother Frank (Harry Richardson), whose home is the great house and estate at Greshamsbury Park.

When Mary is excluded from the wedding preparations of her childhood playmate she probes her uncle for the truth of her birth, and is devastated to learn that she is the illegitimate child of his late brother.

When the terrifying Lady Arabella Gresham (Rebecca Front) discovers that her darling son Frank has fallen in love with Mary, she launches a campaign to separate the two lovebirds, encouraging her son to woo the wealthy American heiress, Miss Dunstable (Alison Brie).

Arabella’s husband has frittered away the family fortune and is only being kept afloat by very favourable loans that Dr Thorne, as both physician and business advisor, has secured from a railway millionaire, Sir Roger Scatcherd (Ian McShane).

However, Sir Roger, in whose hands the fate of Greshamsbury lies, is rapidly drinking himself into an early grave.
