ABC and Screen Australia are pleased to announce the eagerly awaited Shaun Micallef’s On The Sauce , a 3-part documentary series about Australia’s drinking culture, premieres Tuesday 21 July at 8:30pm on ABC and iview.

There are many facets to Shaun Micallef – comedian, actor, writer, hugely popular TV presenter. Perhaps less known, he’s also a dedicated teetotaller. So, when his sons hit drinking age, it got him thinking. What kind of drinking scene are they about to dive into?

Revealing a rarely seen personal side, Shaun shares all sorts of intimate stories, from his self-combusting grandfather to the reason he chose to stop drinking. He meets a variety of everyday Australians, from those who love to drink to those who’ve sworn off it. Along the way, he’s joined by experts who share some eye-opening facts about the “demon drink”.

In this thought-provoking series, Shaun attends an all-girl pub crawl, an alcohol-fuelled B&S ball and an 18th birthday celebration, to gain a better understanding of Australia’s long held love affair with booze.

Shaun also catches up with young abstainers and those recovering from addiction, which makes him question whether Aussie attitudes to alcohol are changing, and how this will impact his own three sons?

Shaun is confronted by the highs and lows of alcohol consumption and witnesses the changing shape of our national pastime. Where are we heading as a nation? And how does Shaun feel after getting drunk for the first time in three decades?

From Sunday 19 July at 7:40pm

Strathaven, Scotland

Kevin McCloud returns to Strathaven in Scotland, to meet flying Instructor Colin MacKinnon and his partner, hovercraft instructor and trapeze enthusiast Marta Briongos. They are part of the very select few who can claim to own their own airfield. In fact, their love of flying is so great they decided to live on the airfield too. Their ambitious plan was to build an incredible metal sculptural home inspired by aircraft hangars right next to the runway.

But the difficulties of building their elegant design soon became apparent – bespoke metal homes are hardly the norm in Scotland and finding people to do the work proved tricky. Then with the project barely off the ground they had to contend with violent rain, snow, and the worst storms for a hundred years. With work slowing to a snail’s pace, what was supposed to be a year-long project stretched into its third year. When the money eventually ran out, Colin and Marta were forced to down tools before they could move in.

Six years on however, with Colin and Marta now in residence, Kevin is finally able to see the finished house in all its metallic glory and discover if their magnificent structure has transformed their lives in the way they’d hoped.

Written and Presented by Kevin McCloud. Series Producer, John Lonsdale. Director: Alex Steinitz. Executive Producer, Cal Turner. A Boundless West production.

Tuesday 30 June at 8:30pm and Tuesday 7 July at 8.30pm*

Actress and presenter Joanna Lumley explores two of the most enigmatic countries in the Caribbean to uncover and share their hidden gems. Travelling from Cuba to Haiti on a variety of different transports, she starts her adventure in the Cuban capital Havana and finishes in the vibrant country of Haiti.

Both countries are undoubtedly poor in monetary terms, but abundantly rich in many other ways. A riot for the senses. Cities full of colourful streets bursting with the rhythm of life, which give way to unspoiled coastlines, pristine beaches, majestic mountains and lush forests. Joanna relishes the chance to experience it all.

Episode One: Tuesday 30 June at 8.30pm

Joanna kicks off her adventure in Havana in a boxing gym with one of Cuba’s rising female boxing stars. She takes a tour around the city with a young Cuban and hears how it is to live in Cuba today then visits the stars of the cabaret at the National Hotel that pre-dates the revolution. She’s shown round a beautiful old Cuban villa still lived in by the lady who once entertained Che Guevara and entertains the cigar workers while they roll cigars in their factory.

She visits the small town of Hershey, built on the success of the sugar industry and visits the tomb of Che Guevara before heading off to Hemingway’s favourite beach which is being turned into a five-star luxury complex. Enjoying the rumba, pina coladas, music and dance of Cuba she ends this episode in Fidel Castro’s hometown, Santiago de Cuba, which is preparing for the 60th Anniversary of the Great Revolution.

Episode Two: Tuesday 7 July at 8.30pm

Joanna completes her Cuban journey by visiting the infamous town of Guantanamo. Giving the prison a wide berth, she discovers that the song Guantanamera was born in the town and she’s meets a talented young singer who is recording the track herself.

57 miles across the Windward Passage to Haiti she discovers a very different country, currently the poorest in the western world.

Taking in the country’s only tourist destination - a fenced off peninsula visited by cruise ships. Joanna wants to show the viewer the other Haiti and heads off to Cap Haitien to discover its history and the reality of life in Haiti.

She visits the Citadel, a mighty fortress built to deter the colonial powers of France, Spain and England and discovers some surprising things about this country, a surf scene, amazing gluten free bread and a vibrant international art community. She takes in a Voodoo ceremony on the Iles a Vaches and comes face to face with the realities of being a homeless child on the streets of Port au Prince.

Her toughest journey to date but her most thrilling, she takes the viewers on an amazing journey filled with tears and laughter.

White Light

image

Tuesday, 14 July at 8.30pm.

Following its run at film festivals in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane last year, and at a time when the world is at a critical juncture in its response to the Black Lives Matter movement, award-winning Australian artist and filmmaker George Gittoes’ critically acclaimed documentary White Light will air on ABC and iview on Tuesday, 14 July at 8.30pm.

White Light is an intimate portrait of the community of Englewood in Chicago’s segregated South Side, an area that has earned the nickname “Chi-Raq” from some residents who liken the area to the war zones in Iraq due to its extremely high gun violence and murder rates. White Light goes to the source of why these civilian deaths are happening, highlighting ways the community is working to bring peace, and end the cycle of revenge which is perpetuated with every new killing.

Gittoes, who has spent over 40 years documenting war zones around the world, travelled to the United States after speaking with a US soldier, Yanos Hagos, who told Gittoes his hometown in Chicago was far more dangerous than fighting in Iraq. Gittoes says, “ I found this to be horribly true. With rising gun violence in the USA, I decided to go to the place in South Side, Chicago that’s been dubbed Chi-Raq to show how little progress has been made since 1968 when first I travelled to the US after the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King and began to understand the depth of racism in that country. "

Our intention is for White Light to be used as a tool by anti-gun violence groups to open discussions on how to bring peaceful and positive change. This is a film that must be seen by Australians too. The worldwide protest movement born in the wake of the murder of Minneapolis man George Floyd earlier this year has brought our own country’s history with Indigenous Australians into review.”

At the epicentre of the violence in Englewood is “May Block”, a neighbourhood that found itself in the spotlight of primetime news when a promising young model, Kaylyn Pryor, who had just won the Mario Tricoci Make Me a Model Competition, was shot and killed while visiting her grandparents. White Light follows the teenagers who belong to the May Block’s Black Stone Brothers led by Solja, who was paralysed and lost his leg after being shot in the local corner store. Respected elder, Steve “Smiley” Armour reveals to Gittoes that the Black Stone Brothers feel trapped in an endless cycle of violence with their rivals that they don’t know how to end. The Brothers express frustration that while the local police arrest and intimidate members of the community for minor offences or drug offences, investigations into murders in the area rarely lead to a conviction. Gittoes captures on camera a frightening and tense moment between the filmmakers and the Brothers when they are surrounded by police while filming a freestyle, street rap session.

At the heart of the documentary and central to the lives of the teens of Englewood is rap music. Every corner has its rap poets, whose lyrics are an outlet to express their frustrations with few opportunities to succeed in their segregated and underfunded communities. During their time in Chicago, Gittoes and his producing partner, wife and musician Hellen Rose, opened their apartment to the May Block community’s young rappers as a safe space for them to come to write, collaborate and record music. Together the filmmakers and teenagers created the soundtrack for White Light .

In 2015, Gittoes was awarded the Sydney Peace Prize, an honour also bestowed on the Black Lives Matter Global Network in 2017. White Light strongly supports the Black Lives Matter movement, highlighting a community that has been neglected and ignored for too long. Gittoes and Rose plan to return to Chicago in October to resume filming the Southside Community through the Presidential election period in November.

Cora’s initial forensic investigations reveal that the body parts all belong to the same victim. A young black man, possibly from Nigeria. But what was he doing on Shetland? She finds traces of Lye on the body. It appears that someone attempted to dissolve the body parts in Lye prior to dumping them at sea. Using CCTV, the team manage to trace the victim’s last movements in Lerwick. He’s spotted at the harbour beside a boat named Silver Darling, and also at a local fish processing plant managed by Gavin Laird. At the bus station where he was last seen, they discover his rucksack in the left luggage. And with it his name - Daniel. Perez releases the CCTV footage to the press in hope of finding out more about who Daniel is. Olivia Lennox’ arrival on Shetland helps shed some light on Daniel’s identity. Olivia is Daniel’s mother. Her son lived with his father in Nigeria. Having finally identified the victim fully, the team set about scrutinising Daniel’s e-mail and social media accounts. And then the investigation takes a sinister turn…

Final Rendezvous

image

Tuesday 11 August at 9.35pm

The story of a female double agent at the centre of Australia’s greatest spy mystery.

Kay Marshall had no ambition to become a spy, but in the early 1960s she found herself centre stage of one of the most important andintriguing Australian espionage cases of the Cold War.

For two years, Australia’s intelligence agency, ASIO, filmed covert meetings in Sydney between the British-born divorcee and Ivan Skripov, a high-ranking KGB officer. Unknown to Skripov, Marshall was a double agent working for ASIO, codenamed ‘Sylvia’.

Skripov taught Sylvia espionage tradecraft, including ‘secret writing’ and the retrieval of parcels from ‘dead letter drops’. A foreign passport she retrieved from beneath a grave at a Sydney cemetery convinced ASIO that the Soviet Union had foreign-born spies living in Australia - infiltrators known as ‘illegal residents.’

The case reached a climax in late December 1962 when Skripov dispatched Sylvia to Adelaide, South Australia, where she was to rendezvous with anunknown KGB operative. Sylvia was given a detailed description of the man. Once passwords were exchanged, she was to hand him a package containing a sophisticated, miniature message sender that could communicate with Moscow undetected.

ASIO feared that the device was destined for a Soviet spy ring that hadpenetrated the British atomic bomb and joint Anglo-Australian rocketry projects in South Australia.

By the time Sylvia arrived at the rendezvous point, ASIO had it staked out with surveillance officers, undercover Commonwealth Police and a photographic team. ASIO’s aim was to detain the mystery man, interrogate him and crack the spy ring.

But the KGB’s man failed to appear.

The collapse of the case haunted ASIO for the rest of the Cold War. Were there too many surveillance men on the ground? Was there a mole inside ASIO? And who was the mystery KGB operative?

Six decades on, investigative filmmaker Peter Butt accessed dozens of reels of ASIO’s surveillance footage taken during the Skripov case. The footage revealed a remarkable story from beginning to end of a brave female agent at the front line of the Cold War. But in one of the reels taken at Adelaide, Peter noticed something odd playing out within metres of the rendezvous point - something that ASIO had clearly failed to investigate.

Brimming with new insights, stunningly restored surveillance footage and Sylvia’s powerful testimony, Peter Butt’s documentary cracks open one of the great espionage mysteries of the Cold War, identifying the elusive KGB operative and a possible KGB murder within days of Sylvia’s Final Rendezvous.

The Great Acceleration

image

From Tuesday 18 August at 9.30pm

Presented by Dr Shalin Naik, The Great Acceleration is a remarkable new science series where the ABC delves into its extensive archive to bring audiences the story of one of the most dramatic chapters of human history.

The Great Acceleration is a term coined by scientists, in an effort to describe the most rapid period of change in human and planetary history. In the last fifty years humankind has achieved astounding heights of discovery and exploration while reaching a pace of consumption that threatens the very fabric of our existence.

Across six one-hour episodes, the series examines major advances in the fields of space exploration, computing, energy, resources, Earth science and our understanding of the evolution of life itself. With expert commentary from scientists at the top of their field, such as geneticist Craig Venter and Nobel Prize winner Barry Barish, we hear firsthand accounts about some of the biggest moments in science, like the discovery of dark energy and gravitational waves, the creation of a new synthetic species and innovative solutions that may save the future of human civilisation.

The first episode explores the ambitious space shuttle mission which began in the 70s and facilitated some of the most important and memorable discoveries and breakthroughs of our time. It also investigates an event that took place earlier this year, where scientists (including Elon Musk) and members of NASA met to discuss the future colonisation of Mars.

Don’t miss the premiere of The Great Acceleration, as it’s an unmissable account of our extraordinary changing world and how new innovations can guide us into a more sustainable future.
