Australia’s Ocean Odyssey

From Tuesday 9 June at 8:30pm

Take a spectacular voyage along the East Australian Current in new three-part landmark series Australia’s Ocean Odyssey: a journey down the East Australian Current.

Taking viewers all the way from the Great Barrier Reef down to Antarctica, this series reveals how ocean currents create life on our planet, and what we can all do to protect our planet’s blue heart.

Hidden in our oceans and unknown to most humans are great rivers of seawater called ocean currents. These are the arteries and veins of planet Earth - a vital planetary life support system that has helped regulate the Earth’s climate, atmosphere, weather and biological diversity for millions of years. This is the story of one particularly fascinating flow - The East Australian Current - an oceanic river that stretches the length of Australia’s east coast. It flows around 3000 kilometres, all the way from the Great Barrier Reef to Tasmania, bringing warm tropical waters to cold southern seas, and in doing so it transforms the lives of every living thing in the region. The East Australian Current is responsible for the fish we eat, the rain that feeds our crops, even the air we breathe. It was made famous by the antics of a determined clownfish in the Pixar film ‘Finding Nemo’, but the true story of the East Australian Current is even more magical.

Narrated by Marta Dusseldrop.

Formerly called Australia’s Ocean Highway at the 2020 upfronts.

Agatha Christie: The Pale Horse

image

Saturday 20 and 27 June at 8:15pm 2 parts

London 1961. Mark Easterbrook (Rufus Sewell) has everything a man could dream of he’s rich, successful and popular, with a beautiful newwife (Kaya Scodelario) and perfect home. But scratch beneath the surface and he’s still grief stricken by the loss of his first wife Delphine (Georgina Campbell). When Mark’s name is discovered on a piece of paper in a dead woman’s shoe everything starts to fall apart for him.

Why did Jessie Davies (Madeleine Bowyer) die, and why is Mark’s name on a piece of paper in her shoe, and who are the other names on the list? Detective Inspector Lejeune (Sean Pertwee) interviews Mark and mentions that the names Tuckerton and Ardingly were also on the list.

Mark has a connection with Thomasina Tuckerton and David Ardingly, and Thomasina is also dead… As Mark tries to work out why he is on the list andwhat it means, everything seems to lead back to the village of Much Deeping. His first wife, Delphine, visited the area on the day of her death.

Much Deeping seems to be an idyllic English village, but it is also a place of old traditions and strange beliefs, a place of witches, curses and spells. Jessie’s employer Zachariah Osborne (Bertie Carvel) tells Mark that witchcraft played a part in Jessie’s death; which Mark angrily rejects. But then he is sent a mysterious corn dolly. As more people named on the list arefound dead, Mark starts to fear for his own life andsanity. Mark is consumed with paranoia, fearful that hislife is at risk and that the perpetrator is someone known to him. Mark feels his own death treading on his heels, breathing down his neck. To make matters worse, Detective Inspector Lejeune seems to be increasingly suspicious of him and Mark feels even more alone. He’s determined to find a rational explanation because there must be one -this isthe1960s not the Dark Ages.

Past and present collide for Mark as his investigations uncover the ties between Delphine and the trio of ‘witches’ (Rita Tushingham, Sheila Atim and Kathy Kiera Clarke) at Much Deeping, putting his relationship with second wife Hermia under great strain. Terrified, Mark becomes hell-bent on uncovering the nature of the witches’ powers and their work at The Pale Horse. With each passing day, each disquieting moment, each tormented, terrifying night, Osborne’s beliefs seem Less fantastical and more plausible. Mark starts to believe in the craft, in the dark arts, in the witches’ peculiar skills. If they are truly as powerful as they seem, can they save him from his nightmares, before whoever wants him dead catches up with him?

That edition of The Virus appears to be a repeat of the program that is shown on Fridays at 7:45pm on ABC News.

In My Blood It Runs

image

Sunday 5 July at 9.30pm

The critically-acclaimed documentary In My Blood It Runs screens in July on ABC and ABC iview.

This heart-warming observational documentary about history, learning, love and resistance premieres on Sunday, July 5, 9.30pm on ABC and ABC iview.

Told through the eyes of charismatic 10-year-old Arrernte/Garrwa boy Dujuan and his family, the film charts the challenges Dujuan faces both in his school and on the streets of Alice Springs.

In his community Dujuan is recognised as a child-healer and a hunter. He speaks three languages, yet despite his depth of wisdom and intelligence, Dujuan is failing in school and facing increasing scrutiny from welfare and the police. As he travels perilously close to incarceration, his family fight to give him a strong Arrente education alongside his western education. We walk with him as he grapples with these pressures, shares his truths and somewhere in-between finds space to dream, imagine and hope for his future.

In My Blood It Runs reveals the complexities First Nations communities face negotiating colonisation whilst maintaining their cultural identities and practices through self-determination, the revitalisation of languages and connection to Country. It is a deeply moving insight into a side of Australia rarely depicted on screen.

Directed by Maya Newell. Produced by Sophie Hyde, Rachel Naninaaq Edwardson, Larissa Behrendt, Maya Newell. Collaborating Directors: Dujuan Hoosan, Carol Turner, Megan Hoosman, James Mawson, Margaret Anderson, Jimmy Mawson. Associate Producer, Lisa Sherrard and Alex Kelly. Executive Producer/Senior Traditional Owner of Alice Springs, Felicity Hayes. Advisors, Margaret Kemarre Turner, Mrs Abbott Perrule, William Tilmouth, Ameila Turner and Jane Vadiveloo with partner organisations Children’s Ground and Akeyuelrre Healing Centre Production company, Closer Productions. In My Blood It Runs was developed and funded via GoodPitch Australia through Documentary Australia Foundation, and received principal production investment and development funding from Screen Australia. Financed with support from the Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program, Screen Territory and South Australian Film Corporation.
