I bought a 3XY Hot Hits windcheater back in the 80s.

Uncle Reco is currently selling ā€˜vintage’ Triple M merch.

In the 80s, SAFM had a storefront in Gawler Place in the Adelaide CBD, and FM104 (now Triple M) had a ā€œ104 Shopā€ in Brisbane. And I’m sure that radio stations have sold showbags over the years containing varying amounts of branded tat.

But until 2SM, I’d never seen merch for a talk station.

I totally forgot about that, I recall the Easter Show in Sydney used to have radio station showbags which you could buy.

I don’t know the full story about those 2SM t-shirts… but judging by photos on socials, it looks like the actual shirts themselves have the original 2SM logo with a slight variation to mention 1269AM & DAB+. So I’m unsure why these online photos must feature the current logo… is it a copyright issue? Does anyone own the rights to that original denim logo?

There was Triple M showbags, lately it’s been WSFM/Gold and KIIS.

I can only imagine how downmarket a 2SM showbag would have to be…

2sm showbag would include a click and garran pocket constitution, some arthritis liniment, anti inflammatory pills, signed photo book of Chris Smith and a Gideons bible.

Don’t forget the No-Doz pills for weekdays between 3 and 6pm.

Also a fake photo at the beach. Terrible photoshop skills or more AI dross.

Most passer-by wouldn’t be aware about 2SM.

Some may think it’s connected with BDSM, perhaps as big a niche as the 2SM audience.

It may be quite sadomasochistic to turn your knob to 1269.
(Thanks for taking one for the team, @Mrs, you glutton for punishment!)

2SM and 2GB exist partly thanks to Aunty and 2SER in Sydney - it’s a wonder Aunty hasn’t started a Radio Peking station yet. Melbourne listeners would support Radio Peking very enthusiastically.

Bring back the SW interval signals I say and a bit of morse code in the news openers - it would be more informative than a lot of broadcast news nowadays.

BDSM,does sound a bit like 2sm, I’m sure it’s Whitlams and he’s bloody communist mates fault.

Let’s change the tune a bit here…

If you had the current high level management working for you and you owned 2SM, without hating on the station, what would your line-up be?

The first thing I’d do is reduce Talkin’ Sport to 5-7pm and have talkback with a Sydney-focused show beforehand (maybe 3-5pm).

I’d also either switch Cheralyn at night, or throw more resources at her show so she can perform better. But I do like the name, The Nightline.

Weekends would get a total overhaul with some stable presenters locked in. I’d also have Pete Graham host Julebox Saturday Night.

I’d reduce Talkin’ Sport to 0 hours.

I think there’s so much you could do to give Sydney a second commercial option, probably rating 5-7 (I don’t think you could achieve much better than this).

Tim is best suited to a 12-3pm timeslot, he’d be able to take on the lighter topics and he’s been there before.

There also needs to be a drive show between 3-6pm.

Sports is ok for an hour at 6-7pm but the Talkin’ Sport presenters need to be left behind, they’ve long lost their passion for presenting a decent show.

I have a lot of ideas but whether it would make money or not is another thing. Community radio probably has shows I like on radio today that probably won’t be profitable (mostly music related shows). Talk back is hard because there isn’t as many people ( teenagers and early 20s year old ) out in the bush (like John Laws / John Pierce) toiling away to become a radio star. It’s more around Youtube/podcast these days for talk shows. The ā€œTalkbackā€ are comments especially on youtube. You don’t need a radio station or TV channel to do this. Playing music is another thing due to copyright it is more difficult/restrictive to do online. Can a Youtuber with 1 mill subs make more money on commercial radio? This might be the wrong thread (should be the future of radio one :)).

My idea for 2SM is to hire the folk on community radio who want to move to a commercial radio music station and do what they do there with a music format that isn’t too ā€œjackā€ but not just a WS playlist. Assuming they want to move, most probably happier to volunteer less pressure. It isn’t always about the music having some good people behind the mic is important for people to tune in. It can be flexible like 2SM was in the 70s, and it did go talk at times for breakfast.

Talking sport seems a bit polarising, but with all the new top end they must want it like it is, they can’t all be passengers? Surely they’re aware of the content.

I believe presenters like Dave Wright, John Setori, Brent Bultitude Cheralyn and Jonno Lis are good.

Jonno when receiving a typical call about a labor politician who works for THE WEF and UN quickly twigged and pushed back such fact checks and stopping the endless Facebook drivel is more entertaining than nodding off and letting the call ramble. Chris Smith, Tony Vidray Matt Roberts and sometimes Dave Cochrane go on an encite some of the most easily debunked rot ever heard on endless repeat.

Most regular callers seem to from a right wing lobby group of some sort and don’t seem genuine.

It’s not free speech because if someone disagrees and pulls the story apart they are told don’t listen then, that’s OK for Hadley or Laws but unless 2sm is be funded by mining, pro life churches and the Zionist lobby that’s not a good attitude for advertising.

Conspiracy theorists and permanent grumps probably aren’t well so using them for content is poor form.

Struggling regional stations need special support from head office like a franchise does to lift the low performers. Sure in the new year they will have more guests and less calls but last year seemed to be running out of worthwhile guests.

ABC LOCAL has many regions and presenters and get a wide variety of calls and texts on quality issues thoughtfully done and topics vary hourly certainly not repeated day after day for months.. so it is possible to do. 2sm needs to dump the regular axe grinders, play younger music, attract new calls and give renewable and all the boring tropes away.

Will it happen? I doubt it.
