Looks a lot more like Rosie O’Donnell then Chris Smith.
That’s being cruel to Rosie!![]()
That’s Chris fist pumping the air after attending the 2SM Christmas party last year and not verbally abusing any female staff members. Good on you Chris. Well done.
I don’t know the story behind this yet but Ron Wilson is gone from 2SM breakfast, he posted on his facebook page just in the last hour or so & there’s now no mention of him even being there on the 2SM website.
Richard King is back on 1269 today, though I’m not sure if it’s just for one day or back to the way it used to be, as the stream is crashing almost every five seconds.
Clearly wasn’t rabid enough for the Chris Smith fans
Just putting it out there. But how good would Chris Smith go at 2SM Breakfast. Sydney only (or network to other stations)… He’d be a real asset 5:30-9am.
RadioToday and RadioInfo both reporting:
“A new host is expected to be announced soon.”
So let’s hope they keep the Sydney-only breakfast slot - and not revert to Richard King as a permanent replacement.
I’ll 100% agree to that, but from a Newcastle 2HD point of view, I don’t really care what or who’s on 2SM breakfast, 2HD breakfast with Richard King was just getting back into the swing of being Newcastle focused again after having him networked over the past couple of years, with local news, views, issues, information & competitions will local benefits/interests/prizes to locals.
This mornings show was probably already prepped & doing 2SM was dumped on him last minute I’m guessing, as this mornings show was still aimed/presented to the local market, with a 2SM tack-on.
Yep. Well said. And good on Richard King for still solely focusing on Newcastle & the Hunter.
Mind you, for the truly networked shows out of Newcastle, they really need to be careful as to how often they refer to it as, “2HD and the Super Radio Network”.
I really feel that 2SM’s brand needs to be the hero - as this is where the majority of the network focus should be.
IIRC 2UE used to do this so well, when they’d simply say it as, “2UE and network stations”.
Why can’t they just do the same and scrap the “Super Radio” branding?
it probably should have been, but it’s not & hasn’t been for a very long time, most of the public & even many in the radio industry don’t know 2SM even still exists, there’s various stations across the Super radio Network that would have a higher standing as to be the hero than 2SM, just because it’s in or the Sydney station doesn’t give it network hero, leading station status.
2UE programs were syndicated to external Networks, so what they said made sense. Rarely will you hear an SCA or ARN, networked show, be it in house or externally syndicated, say the station it’s coming from & network, 2SM should probably drop saying 2SM or 2HD or referencing it as the 2SM Super Radio Network, networked shows should just say “on the Super Radio Network” or similar, don’t reference any station.
Like it or not, Newcastle has ended up essentially the Super Network hub for programming, I’m not sure 2SM even has their own station general manager?
When the Super Network first came together, Lismore was the network hub & the Satellite uplinks were located there, they got moved to 2SM in Sydney but most programming still came from Lismore or Radio 97 Tweed Heads, with everything eventually leaving Lismore & most programs coming from Radio 97, as those programs changed & presenters left, etc. programming moved to Newcastle, Radio 97 is still where Network management is located.
There was a brief period where maybe half or a bit more of the network programming came out of 2SM in Sydney, with the rest coming from Newcastle & one or two from Tweed Heads, but costs to do that over revenue they were likely bringing in across the network made it very costly, as wages of staff in Sydney would have to be higher than staff regionally, purely due to higher living costs & what staff in Sydney would be wanting to be paid, so it makes total sense if you’re running the network on the smell of an oily rag, don’t run it from Sydney.
To be honest, I’m not sure why they even have 2SM as part of the network, I’d imagine it’s financial outgoings would be much more than it’s incoming, & unless they plan to throw crap loads of money at it, get some big names on big wages, & promote the crap out of the station, & probably even run it as a metro stand alone station, they should sell it off & just concentrate on being a regional network.
2SM was bought dirt cheap as mostly a real estate investment & they played on the name & standing 2SM once had in Sydney but no longer did, naming the Super Radio Network after it, there’s been nothing Super about 2SM since Caralis has owned it & I don’t think it has earned or deserves the lead network station naming rights/status, not at this point in time anyway.
Accorodmg to the Tele Ron only had a contract for six months, with an option for six more.
That wouldn’t fill me with confidence.
100% agreed. Chris has plenty of breakfast experience from his years on 2GB filling in at sparrow’s fart for the (former) great man Alan B Jones. Now that would be some proper competition against Ben Fordham…if 2SM are serious and wish to re-enter the ratings system.
Seems strange that Ron made the decision to leave a position where he was well respected and at a station rating well to take up a 6 month contract. It was a risky move that hasn’t paid off unfortunately, all the best to him.
And … if Chris moves to breakfast, that opens up Mornings. Anyone know an experienced morning radio presenter currently unemployed? We heard last week on 2GB how much the GOAT John Laws is missing radio. And teased a possible return to the airwaves. What if this whole thing is already set up to happen ?? :))
The fact that both parties knew it could only be a 6mth show, hopefully tells us that SRN management have others in the curtains waiting to come through.
So hopefully it won’t take too long to replace Ron and a local 2SM breakfast show.
Still, a big (and somewhat embarrassing) loss for the station after such a big climb over the past 6-8mths.
As for Chris Smith, I think I heard him mention he has a 3yr contract with the network. I doubt he’d give up 9-noon, even if it meant a better Sydney breakfast show.
Surely more details will emerge from Ron’s very sudden departure. Too weird.
2SM hoping to poach Tim Webster? Woohoo !
I agree on Chris Smith. With SRN’s move to local breakfast shows in many areas Chris would need to give up at least some of his networking to take on a breakfast shift.
Tim Webster definitely sounds like a logical choice and I think he would present a decent show. The only other one that comes to mind is Luke Bona, other than filling in at 2GB not sure what else his current role involves.
BREAKING: 2SM just aired a promo mentioning Tim Webster from 5am weekdays.
Good move 2SM.
