Seven may have won the ratings year (again) but cracks are showing. My Kitchen Rules was thumped by Married at First Sight, House Rules’ ratings were down on last year, while Dance Boss and Back with the Ex were flops. Seven continued to struggle on Thursdays without AFL matches, all because of its insistence on showing triple episodes of Home and Away to satisfy its supply deal with Channel 5 UK. And I lost count the number of times 7mate helped Seven winning the night in network shares after trailing Nine in primary shares.

#3

Can’t they just show Home and Away four nights a week so that it wont die? If it’s because of that Channel 5 contract then Seven should tell them to bugger off and find a network who is willing to play out the season like how Seven used to (5 nights a week, all single episodes).

#4

Considering Channel 5 probably pay for majority of the show that might not go down too well.

In this day and age you would be pretty stupid to tell a network to deal with it when they are willing to pay and broadcast the amount of episodes 5 are willing to pay.

#5

That’s all well and good but that contract is killing Home and Away here. Simply speaking, Channel 5 in UK is killing an Australian drama in Australia where it should ideally thrive rather than languish behind competitors.

Neighbours seem to do alright now, whilst Home and Away continues to die.

#6

But Home and Away has four times the ratings of Neighbours.

#7

But Neighbours is at least steady on 10Peach and almost always make the Top 5 in the demos. Home and Away is dwindling and hardly ever reach the Top 5 demos (even The Project beats it).

#8

I think that is Seven’s treatment not channel 5’s. Seven could potentially air it on 7two 6 times a week if they wanted. There are ways to treat it better.

To tell a huge contract to fuck off and take less episodes would be madness and break a relationship with a massive overseas player. If they say make 300 episodes you make 300 episodes. Simple.

Home and Away often makes the top 5 demos too. It has also been quite consistent in the 7 o’clock timeslot. Its only the 7:30 slot that it doesn’t do too well. But it doesn’t seem seven are too worried. They seem to be ok with losing viewers a few nights a week because their Fridays and Saturdays are so strong. I guess it makes sense every network gives up on one night a week (look at Ten’s Saturdays and Sundays) and Nine’s Fridays and Saturdays.

#9

Does anyone know when does the 2019 Ratings season return?

All those figures really do show you how reliant seven are on sport. Some really poor entertainment entries from seven which questions whether their sports deals are worth it? Especially since the reason for the sports deals are to promote and inflate the entertainment programs.

#13

Of course they’re worth it. Imagine how bad they would be without them.

#14

That’s because Seven doesn’t innovate and relies of MKR and HR to do the job. They used to be unbeatable when they had dramas, both the shows, and reality talent shows on the air. Now that they’ve let the latter go, they’re struggling.

Seven just isn’t the place to see new, innovative shows unlike Nine and 10. Seven’s attempt in trying new shows blows in their face while Nine and 10 usually have more successes. They need something like (but not exactly) Big Brother to create buzz and to attract eyeballs, and a variety show like Running Man and The Amazing Race to spice things up. It’s about time Seven went for 10’s target demographics (they’ll have a lot more success considering most tune into Seven).

#15

No need to be disgusting. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

But I’m sure they don’t want to be third or fourth like Ten always are.

#16

Nine could easily target 10’s demographics with shows like MAFS and Block, why can’t Seven try that? They’re always old skewing and that’s not gonna help them.

#17

If it ain’t broke then why fix it? At the end of the day, Seven is a business. If they are making a huge profit by targeting all demographics then why change it?

They have House Rules and Instant Hotel. Who says Seven aren’t trying to target other demographics anyway?

Look at all the programming they had this year like Bride and Prejudice, Take Me Out, Back with the Ex, The Single Wives, First Dates, Australian Spartan, Yummy Mummies etc. Problem is they just don’t have the same success on Seven because their usual audience don’t like them and other audiences are watching something else.

#18

Well in that case they’ll just have to keep commissioning more formats until one works.

Their schedule next year is hardly new with a bunch of dating rubbish. Can’t they do something else?

House Rules is very old skewing and Masterchef/The Voice always beats it.

#19

You’re obsessed with younger demographics more than Seven are, obviously.

#20

Yes obsessed is the word, but only in the interest to see Seven thrive and not go broke (from a financial sense). I’m no network programmer or finance expert, but I have a feeling Seven is losing a lot of money not because of the AFL, but the lack of profit from advertisers, which is directly because of their target demographic (55+). Nine was able to gain a profit due to their broad yet younger demographics, which brought more advertising money. If Seven continues to make losses then we will have another Network 10 all over again.

Seven can win the mighty total people for all I could care but if they want to thrive as a business they need to shift their focus to younger demographics (since they’re a business then they should aim to make a profit, not a loss).
