Channel Seven will be too good for tonight thanks to afl. IT will without a doubt push Channel Seven’s shares over 50% in Melbourne. Nine will finish 2nd in Melbourne at 24%.

AFL - Richmond v Collingwood - 1.21m (including 898k in Melbourne) + on 7mate in (BNE, SYD, PER)
NRL - Melbourne Storm v Cronulla Sharks - 656k (including 60k in Melbourne). + on 9Gem in (ADE, PER).

I will be very surprised if it gets close to that, as it did that 11 years ago with NO Foxtel simulcast.

On the flip side though, it should definitely set a new AFL record for Foxtel tonight.

Friday September 21
Tonight’s game at the MCG will be massive. I reckon Fox Footy’s simulcast will break last year’s record audience of 551,000.

AFL 1st preliminary final: Richmond v Collingwood
Seven 990,000 (Melbourne 840,000 + Adelaide 150,000) + 7mate 184,000 (Sydney 23,000 + Brisbane 21,000 + Perth 140,000)
Better Homes and Gardens 0.55m

NRL 2nd preliminary final: Melbourne v Cronulla
Nine 820,000 (Sydney 430,000 + Melbourne 70,000 + Brisbane 320,000) + 9Gem 22,000 (Adelaide 11,000 + Perth 11,000)

But two years ago, the Giants v Bulldogs match set a record of 1 million viewers watching the Preliminary Final in Melbourne. This was the highest ever Preliminary Final rating program that Melbourne has recorded.

But I think that tomorrow’s match at Optus Stadium could see the ratings hit 1 million mark in Melbourne for the 2nd time in 3 years.

Agreed.

But for the above reason, I reckon this is a tough ask for FTA. Over a decade with Pies v Cats for sure, because no Fox.

That was for post-game. The match rated 736,000

Seven News will get a massive boost from the AFL in the afternoon. Nine however will have the night to itself with live NRL and should win with a small margin.

AFL 2nd preliminary final: West Coast v Melbourne
Seven 1.15m (Melbourne 750,000 + Adelaide 120,000 + Perth 280,000) + 7mate 90,000 (Sydney 40,000 + Brisbane 50,000)

NRL 1st preliminary final: Sydney Roosters v South Sydney

Movie: Catch Me If You Can rpt 0.43m (Nine + 9Gem)

Seven will get home safely but Nine will take out the primetime viewing thanks to NRL. Seven will have 90% of the audience watching the West Coast v Melbourne in Melbourne (where Demons fans are watching via the Federation Square).
2nd Preliminary Final - West Coast v Melbourne - 1.43m (Melbourne 898k + Adelaide 144k + Perth 303k) + 7mate (Sydney 42k, Brisbane 44K)
Seven News - 1.5m (with a massive boost in Melbourne)
NRL Preliminary Final - Sydney v South Sydney - 800k (466k in Sydney, 334k in BNE) + 9Gem 77k (Melbourne 46k, Adelaide 14k, Perth 17k).
