The Doctor Blake Mysteries

Quite a dramatic finale

###Doctor Blake back for series 5

The Doctor will be back! ABC is thrilled to announce that our number one locally produced drama series, The Doctor Blake Mysteries, has been commissioned for a fifth series.

Starring the formidable talents of Craig McLachlan as police surgeon Dr Lucien Blake and Nadine Garner as his devoted housekeeper Jean, The Doctor Blake Mysteries continues to attract a huge audience year upon year.

ABC Director of Television Richard Finlayson says “We are delighted to commission more Doctor Blake for our audience. Series four has been the most successful to date with an average audience of 1.67 million viewers across TV broadcast and iview*. Doctor Blake satisfies an appetite for engaging, home grown stories.”

Series Co-creator and showrunner George Adams says “December Media is elated to be returning to 1960s Ballarat once again to bring our loyal audience more tales of murder, mystery, mayhem and a wee bit of love with Blake, Jean and all our favourite characters.”

Series five will see Doctor Blake facing mysteries on every front, from the boxing ring to the vineyards of Victoria, from Gypsy camps to the Debutants Ball. Loyalties will be tested, friendships will be strained and faiths will be challenged. Will Blake and Jean finally find the happiness they so richly deserve? And can they then survive the return of an avenging nemesis from the recent past?

The fifth series of The Doctor Blake Mysteries will be filmed later in the year and air on ABC TV in 2017.

##abc says goodbye to the good doctor with a telemovie.

Development is underway between the ABC and December Media on a telemovie, that will be the final installment of The Doctor Blake Mysteries.

Since its debut in 2012, The Doctor Blake Mysteries starring Craig McLachlan and Nadine Garner, has been the top rating Australian Drama series on ABC TV. Fans are eagerly awaiting Series 5, which will launch later in the year on ABC and ABC iview and which will conclude with a movie-length finale.

ABC Head of Scripted Production Sally Riley says, “Dr Blake has had a sensational run on the ABC and we feel that the time is right to go out while we are still on top. We have a fantastic final season still to come and we look forward to wrapping the series up with a satisfying movie-length finale, as we bid farewell to an Australian TV icon.”

Series Co-creator and show-runner George Adams says “Having been the ABC’s number one returning Australian drama year on year we felt that we wanted to go out on a high and to give our loyal audience around Australia and the World, through the telemovie, answers to many of the remaining mysteries between Blake and Jean.”

The Doctor Blake Mysteries final telemovie will air later in the year following Series 5.

In short, the show will end after this season with the possibility of a telemovie to follow.

Fans are not happy. Ratings are still great and the main stars want to keep making it, so why does the ABC want to axe it?

Newscorp seem to be taking an interest in this development. They must think its international sales must be a good money spinner. Would the ABC be willing to hand it over to Foxtel to keep it going, as Seven did with A Place To Call Home?

Herald Sun reports Seven could be the most likely saviour of Doctor Blake Mysteries. It will be ironic given Seven axed another period series (A Place to Call Home) before it was saved by Foxtel.

It wouldn’t be the first time that Seven has had to learn a lesson after foolishly letting something go: Neighbours.

I would expect this to be quite likely to happen… they will be looking at a new slate of content for next year and DBM would fit perfectly.

The small number of episodes for each season also suits Seven’s early season schedule for 2018. Assuming the show is renewed for 8 episodes, it can finish just before the Commonwealth Games in early April.

I say this is serious and will more likely happen than not!

DBM is one of the only shows I really loved and watched regularly on the ABC (apart from Midsomer Murders :stuck_out_tongue:)

PLEASE SEVEN… SAVE DOCTOR BLAKE

I’m surprised Foxtel wasn’t sniffing around it. Either way I hope 7 does pick it up, it would be great publicity for them.

Only negative… Ads :persevere:

It has been. There was talk about the interest from Foxtel just a few weeks back.

Well if rumours are correct this will be great news. @LukeMovieMan watching the show with ads is a small price to pay.
