WOODIES, STUDENTS DO BATTLE IN INTRUST SUPER SHUTE SHIELD OPENER ON SATURDAY

Eastwood and Sydney University have been two of Sydney’s best-performing rugby clubs in the past decade which makes their Intrust Super Shute Shield opening round clash at Sydney University on Saturday the ideal aperitif for season 2016.
The Woodies this year are chasing a third straight Shute Shield title and will go into the match without former captain Hugh Perrett and star fullback Ben Batger, who both retired after last year’s griping 15-12 grand final win over Manly.

The Students boast some of Australian rugby’s best young talent and will be difficult to beat at home, particularly if former Waratahs centre Tom Carter finds early season form.

For the second year running, the Intrust Super Shute Shield is back this Saturday live and free on 7TWO in Sydney and across Prime in regional New South Wales and also live streaming with 7PLUS Live.

“Following the excellent performance by the Wallabies in last year’s Rugby World Cup, rugby’s appeal in Australia is on an upswing and the 2016 season is shaping up as one of the best ever,” says Nick Fordham, Director of Club Rugby TV.

“Last year was about reviving the great Shute Shield,” he said. ”We have our incredible sponsors back this year and will be announcing each of them over the coming weeks during our broadcast. We’re also proud to announce that the Australian Rugby Union are also officially on board with us this year and we have their full backing and support. We’re very grateful that CEO Bill Pulver has agreed to get behind us and support this broadcast in 2016”.

Seven Head of Sport Saul Shtein said ““The Shute Shield, as one of Australia’s first football competitions, and with such a rich heritage, is perfect for us. It’s great rugby, great rivalries and great personalities. We look forward to another terrific season”.
This week we commence our sponsors rollout with ESPN, who are a foundation partner of the Intrust Super Shute Shield. Director of Digital Products & Partnerships for ESPN Australia/New Zealand Lance Peatey said; “ESPN has a long heritage with rugby via ESPNscrum – one of the oldest and most credible rugby websites in the world – and we are delighted to continue our support of the Intrust Super Shute Shield in 2016.”

Australia’s oldest and richest foot race on Channel 7, 7mate, PLUS7 Live

One of the world’s most famous and prestigious foot races, the Stawell Gift, will be broadcast on Seven again and for the first time in history, viewers can stream the event on the PLUS7 Live app.

A crack field has been assembled for this year’s race including Tasmanian teenage sprint sensation Jack Hale, New Zealand’s fastest man Joseph Millar and past winners Mitchell Williams-Swain, Andrew Robinson and Matt Wiltshire.

Seven will also broadcast the Women’s Gift that will see a stellar line up of elite sprinters, including Australia’s 100m record holder Melissa Breen and last year’s winner Grace O’Dwyer, competing for the coveted title and $60,000 prize pool.

The Stawell Gift is an institution at Central Park, as runners race for glory and prize money in a bid to become part of the race’s rich folklore.

Dating back to 1878, the Stawell Gift is run on grass over 120m up a slight gradient, athletes are handicapped according to form and ability, starting off various marks, as they aim to join athletics’ elite who have taken out the prestigious title.

The two and a half hour coverage on Easter Monday will include the event’s marquee race, heats and finals, with host Peter Donegan marking his 20th anniversary broadcasting at the Stawell Gift.

###US Masters

Thursday 7 April to Monday 11 April - 7mate

Jason Day and Adam Scott to lead the Aussie charge at The Masters

Newly crowned world no. 1 Jason Day and 2013 winner Adam Scott head to the Masters at Augusta among the favourites to take out the coveted green jacket.

Day has risen to new heights recently after winning the World Golf Championships Match play final and the Arnold Palmer Invitational back to back, meaning he has won six of his past 13 tournaments.
Scott has also been in excellent form having taken out two PGA tour events already this year at the Honda Classic and World Golf Championships-Cadiallac Championship, as well as two runner-ups at the Northern Trust Open and the CIMB Classic.

Last year’s winner Jordan Speith is also likely to be in the hunt on the final day at this year’s Masters, while Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy will be in search of the only major to elude him to date.
Warrnambool’s Marc Leishman and Steven Bowditch are other Australians who will have the privilege of gracing the fairways at Augusta for the Master this year.

Peter Donegan hosts 7mate’s LIVE coverage of The Masters. Australian major winner Ian Baker-Finch and Wayne Grady will preview all the action from Augusta at the start of each day’s play and ‘Whispering’ Pat Welsh will also be updating from the fairways of Augusta.

In addition to Seven’s expert team, there will be commentary from a string of the biggest names on golf via the host broadcaster CBS, including iconic host Jim Nantz, three-time winner Nick Faldo and Ian Baker-Finch, who will once again be commentating from Amen Corner on the 11th and 12th holes.

###Australian Swimming Championships

7-14 April Channel 7 and 7TWO

All of the big names of Australian swimming, including Cameron McEvoy, James Magnussen, Cate and Bronte Campbell, Mitch Larkin, Emily Seebohm and Grant Hackett, line up behind the blocks aiming to fulfil their dreams of qualifying for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Fans will be hoping Hackett can become the oldest ever Australian at 36 to make the Australian Olympic swim team, as he contests the 200m and 400m freestyle events at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide.
Dual world 100m freestyle champion Magnussen will also draw plenty of attention, as he aims to recapture top form in his comeback from shoulder and back injuries.

Fresh from their second highest haul of gold medals in London 2012, our Paralympic swimmers will also be competing for a spot on the Australian Paralympic squad heading to Rio, including four-time Paralympic gold medallist Ellie Cole.
Hosted by Kylie Gilles, Basil Zempilas leads the call with expert commentary from Olympic gold medallist Giaan Rooney and Australia’s greatest ever Paralympian Matt Cowdrey, along with poolside interviews from Nathan Templeton.

The announcement of the official Australian Olympic Swimming Team and the Paralympic team will be broadcast live on Thursday April 14, hosted by Bruce McAvaney.

Swimming will feature on Seven during a number of major international events including this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio and the FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary the year after in 2017 and the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in 2018.

How long has it been since Kylie Gillies hosted a sporting event on Seven? I thought this would be Melanie McLaughlin’s first sports broadcast since moving from Ten.
Brave move by Seven showing swimming trials on the main channel resting the likes of Downton Abbey and Criminal Minds for the week. It will be better to show the trials on 7TWO throughout and promote the coverage frequently on other channels.

It will probably do decently between Seven being able to promote the coverage during the AFL on the weekend and having MKR as it’s lead-in for most of the 2nd week. Not to mention it’s an Olympic year so there will be more interest in the champions compared to a normal year when it probably would have been shown on 7Two exclusively.

The Australian Masters golf will not be held this year according to IMG: article
That means Seven has one less sporting event to cover towards the end of this year. Whether the iconic event will return in 2017 is another matter.
The Masters was in the doldrums once before, in 2008. Then the tournament promoter switched broadcasters from Seven to Nine and Fox Sports and managed to lure Tiger Woods to come to play in 2009 and 2010. This time who is going to save the Masters?

@JohnsonTV - If the article is anything to go by, then Seven don’t have the rights to either Australian Masters or Perth International as they expired in 2015. Also, I think other major tournaments are up renewal.

###Royal Randwick Group 1

Australia’s richest race day is on Seven’s Saturday Arvo Racing, with four iconic Group 1 races at Royal Randwick. The major drawcards include the world’s richest open sprint race, the $2.5 million Darley TJ Smith Stakes, the world’s richest mile, the $3 million Doncaster Mile and the $2 million Australian Derby.

Winx will be attempting her sixth Group 1 title win with the Doncaster Mile, as she aims to extend her eight-race winning streak. Whilst Winx is the shortest-priced favourite in almost a century, she is also up against last year’s winner Kermadec, who is also trained by Chris Waller.

In the TJ Smith Stakes, last year’s winner Chautauqua will be returning to defend his title. The 1200m sprint includes multiple Group 1 winners Flamberge, Exosphere and Terravista and Delectation all vying for a shot at Group 1 glory.
Seven’s coverage will be hosted by Bruce McAvaney, with expert analysis from Simon Marshall and Simon O’Donnell.

Jason Richardson has all the news from the mounting yard, with James Jordan on the ground providing expert form analysis. Neil Kearney, Rachael Finch and Candice Dixon are reporting on the colour and characters from Randwick on day one of The Championships.

Bruce gets an exclusive tour with John O’Shea inside the heart of the Godolphin operation. And Neil catches up with small time trainer Pat Webster who saddles up Happy Clapper in the Doncaster Mile.

Stosur and Dasha lead Aussie Fed Cup hopes against USA on Seven

After her inspiring run at this year’s Australian Open, Daria ‘Dasha’ Gavrilova will make her Fed Cup debut alongside Sam Stosur, Casey Dellacqua and Arina Rodionova against the Unites States.
Alicia Molik will captain the Australian team on clay at Pat Rafter Arena in Brisbane, with Gavrilova and Stosur likely to play singles and Rodionova and Dellacqua to team up for the doubles.
Australia is aiming to return to the World Group after beating Slovakia in the first round tie in February.
Australian doubles great Todd Woodbridge hosts

Fed Cup has two singles matches on day 1. What happens if the coverage goes beyond 3pm with both matches go into three sets? Will it move to 7TWO to allow delayed AFL to begin in Melbourne?

Champion is the Criterion here on Saturday Arvo Racing

Sydney’s richest race, the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes headlines a cracking day of Group racing for The Championships at Royal Randwick.

Four Group 1 races worth $8 million attracts some of Australia’s best thoroughbreds to the 2000m Queen Elizabeth Stakes, the 3200m Sydney Cup, 2400m Australian Oaks and the Queen of the Turf Stakes.

The Queen Elizabeth Stakes has a top-class field of Group 1 winners vying for the coveted title, including 2016 BMW Stakes winner Preferment and Ranvet Stakes winner The United States, as well as last year’s victor Criterion.

A field of 11 stayers for the $2 million Sydney Cup will give reigning champion Grand Marshal a chance to claim a back-to-back win, with last year’s runner-ups Who Shot Thebarman and Like a Carousel also returning for another shot.

Seven’s coverage will be hosted by Bruce McAvaney, with expert analysis from Simon Marshall and Simon O’Donnell. Jason Richardson has all the news from the mounting yard, with James Jordan on the ground providing expert form analysis. Rachael Finch and Candice Dixon are reporting on the colour and characters on the final day of The Championships.

Neil Kearney catches up with trainer David Hayes and his globetrotting star Criterion ahead of his final race in the Queen Elizabeth, while Jason spends a day with trainer Michael Freedman, who has returned from Singapore to setup a training operation in Sydney. And we check in with the Inglis Easter Yearling Sales to follow the fortunes of the half-brother to super mare Winx, who was sold during the week.

Does anyone find it strange, how Seven Sport comes only out of Melbourne?

The production crew, graphics, even the twitter accounts (Ch 7, 7 AFL & 7 Olympics).

But I suppose with the AFL and Olympics after all these years, there’s probably heaps of experienced commentators, producers, directors, cameramen, etc who travel.

At least they’re using Kylie Gillies (Sydney).

No stranger than Seven News having its main base in Sydney.
