Ronnie Chieng: International Student

###Ronnie Chieng: International Student

Following on from the top rating, acclaimed Comedy Showroom pilot, and in partnership with Comedy Central (US), The Daily Show’s Ronny Chieng returns to Australia to give us more of his hilarious take on being a foreign student. He’s just got to deal with party-hard students, a neurotic faculty, unsociable housemates and his attraction to a pretty Aussie girl first.

Runs for: Six x 30min episodes on ABC TV and iview

Coming in 2017

Ronny Chieng: International Student Starts Production for ABC TV and Comedy Central

Production commenced this week on the six-part series of Ronny Chieng: International Student, for ABC in Australia and Comedy Central’s flagship channel in the United States.

Produced by Sticky Pictures (Sammy J and Randy in Ricketts Lane, Skitbox’s Wham Bam Thankyou Ma’am), and written by and starring the internationally acclaimed stand-up comedian, Ronny Chieng: International Student was one of six comedy pilots which aired last year on ABC TV as part of a joint initiative with Screen Australia, Comedy Showroom, and becomes the first to be green lit to full series.

Sticky Pictures’ CEO and Producer of the series, Donna Andrews, said, “We are very excited to be going into series production on Ronny Chieng: International Student. ABC audiences loved the first (pilot) episode, and we look forward to sharing more of Ronny’s unique comedy style, with stories inspired by his real-life experiences as an international student”.

In the series (as in real life), Ronny Chieng is a Malaysian student who’s come to Australia to study law. Though smart, driven and competitive, he’s also blunt, barbed, and not afraid to cut through B.S. - so it’s not long before Ronny is at odds with most people on campus. Adding to Ronny’s rollercoaster is his strong relationship with his Malaysia-based mum, which veers between affection and agitation, often in the space of a single conversation, and a friendship with all-Australian classmate Asher (Molly Daniels) that could mean something more… if Ronny can ever work up the courage.

Ronny will be taking time away from his role on the multi Emmy Award winning The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, based in New York, to return to Melbourne and says, “I’m very excited about getting the chance to relive my misspent youth at University and righting all my wrongs. Like in Quantum Leap or Atonement. But with Asians”.

ABC’s Head of Comedy Rick Kalowski, said “Ronny Chieng: International Student’s full series is even better than its hilarious pilot: it’s right on point for Australia today, richly diverse both onscreen and off, and, above all, furiously funny. If you love Ronny Chieng, you’ll adore this”.

Mike Cowap, Investment Manager for Multiplatform, Screen Australia, said “When Ronny Chieng joined forces with go-to comedy producers Sticky Pictures to create this satirical take on the Aussie student experience, we weren’t surprised to see it become a highlight in the Comedy Showroom showcase. We are delighted to be supporting this into a full season where it will again bring to the screen its distinct international flavour alongside a diverse cast and hilarious script.”

Film Victoria’s CEO, Jenni Tosi said, “Victoria is renowned for comedic talent and we’re delighted to be supporting Ronny Chieng: International Student which will shoot at Melbourne University and other locations around Melbourne.”

The series will hit screens on ABC TV and iview in mid-2017, with its U.S. premiere on Comedy Central to follow.

###Ronny Chieng: International Student

From Wednesday, 7 June at 9pm

The ABC’s highly anticipated new comedy series Ronny Chieng: International Student will premiere on Wednesday, 7 June at 9pm on the ABC and iview. The show, produced by Sticky Pictures, is the ABC’s first co-production with Comedy Central, where Ronny Chieng is a series regular on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, and will air on its flagship channel later this year in the USA.

Originally one of six comedy pilots that aired on ABC in 2016 as part of the AACTA award-winning Comedy Showroom (a joint initiative between the ABC and Screen Australia), Ronny Chieng: International Student is the first show to be green lit to full series, based on overwhelmingly positive audience response.

In the show (as in real life), Ronny is a Malaysian student who’s come to Australia to study law. Though smart, driven and competitive, he’s also blunt and barbed, so it’s not long before Ronny is at odds with most people on campus. Adding to Ronny’s rollercoaster is his relationship with his Malaysia-based mum, which veers between affection and agitation, often in the space of a single conversation, and a friendship with all-Australian classmate Asher (Molly Daniels) that could mean something more - if Ronny can ever work up the courage.

Rick Kalowski, ABC Head of Comedy and series Executive Producer, says: “I couldn’t be more excited to launch Ronny Chieng: International Student. Joyously funny and perfectly on point for these tricky times in Australian cultural identity, the show is a sheer delight from start to finish”.

Donna Andrews, Sticky Pictures’ CEO and Producer of the series says,” Ronny Chieng: International Student is a riotous exploration of the life of a university student, not only through the eyes of an international student, but from Ronny’s unique comedic perspective. This series is full of surprises!”

More info on show.

There are seven episodes including the pilot that has already screened (available on iview).

The regular character are

The character of Ronny Chieng is a Malaysian student who has come to Australia to study law. He’s blunt, barbed and not afraid to cut through BS, which quickly puts him at odds with most people on campus. He can’t stand stupid people, but somehow keeps getting dragged into their dramas. He has an intense relationship with his Mom, which veers between affection and agitation, often in the space of a single conversation. As a genuine outsider, Ronny is very suspicious of any group that wants him as a member. Ronny is caught between his old life and his new life, between the international students and the local students, and between his Mom’s expectations and his own dreams, whatever the hell they may be.

Molly Daniels plays Asher Angus a first-year law student from a small town in country Victoria, where the biggest cultural event is the bachelor and spinsters ball at the local footy club. Gung-ho and open to anything this new life throws at her, Asher will always go with the flow, just as long as she never has to go back to her home town. Like Ronny, she’s a genuine outsider at the University, but with her outgoing nature, Asher is the force that keeps pulling Ronny outside the safe haven of the international students.

Hoa Xuande plays Vietnamese Elvin Tay the self-appointed leader of the International Students. With a brash self-confidence that borders on blind arrogance, Elvin struts around campus like a member of an Asian boy band. Taking himself too seriously, Elvin’s the sort of guy who will never laugh at a joke, unless he made it. With his education fully funded by his parents, Elvin just wants to get through class, with the best possible marks, so he can walk straight into a high-flying legal job.

Elvin has no interest in campus culture, aside from playing Mah-jong in the international dorm with his tight-knit gang of Asian students. His idea of extracurricular activities is doing an extra law subject to earn more credit.

Shuang Hu plays Wei Jun an international student from Singapore. She’s smart, studious and very sweet, but prone to the occasional violent outburst. She’s fallen in with Elvin and Joderick, but even they couldn’t tell you what she’s thinking.

Keith Brockett is Joderick is an international student from Hong Kong. He’s polite, quiet, and unassuming, and slightly more approachable than the other International students. He’s a tech-head who is always glued to his smart phone.

Patch May plays Craig Cooper an American international student who crashes full throttle into International House in Australia, much to the frustration of the Asian international students. Craig bleeds red, white and blue and the star-spangled banner; life for him is one gigantic frat party and everyone’s invited. Craig’s an upbeat, positive person whose willingness to do anything to have a good time is both endearing and infuriating for Ronny.
