Nine Sports Broadcasting

Qantas announced at this morning’s full year results that passengers flying during the Boeing 737 and Airbus A330 inflight internet trials later this year would be able to watch a live stream of the summer’s cricket season under a partnership between the airline and Cricket Australia. Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce says in the press release:

A flight from Sydney to Perth should be enough time to catch an entire match of 20/20… Live cricket is just one of the content partnerships we’re looking at.

That means fans will be able to watch Nine’s telecast (and I assume Ten’s BBL coverage as well) in the air.

I don’t think Optus technically has streaming rights. They’re sponsorship with Cricket Australia is how they provided their customers free access to CA’s streaming subscription service.

[quote]Rally Australia has announced a new free-to-air television broadcast deal which will see this year’s final round of the World Rally Championship move to the Nine Network.

Revealed at the launch of the November 17-20 Coffs Harbour event today, rally organisers have secured a new and improved package that takes over from its previous deal with Network Ten.

Although full details of the arrangement and the make-up of the broadcast team is yet to be confirmed, at least three stages will be shown live on Nine.

Soon Ten won’t have the rights to broadcast anything.

Not surprising this is moving across to Nine, hopefully they can do it more justice than TEN has.

Nine saying that they won’t be paying more for a new Cricket rights deal. They think the increase from 45 million to 100 million on the current rights deal was enough and that CA can extract more money from the BBL rights to secure an increase in the overall money it gains.

I think the timing is right for Ten to strike on a whole package. If this is the only sports rights they acquire exclusively it would work well considering all their other rights are crappy simulcast deals and the dregs of sports.

Yep. Another big offer like they did in 2013 and they should win all the rights. They need it.
But Foxtel will know this and they will try and form a partnership.

I hope Cricket Australia should learn from Sky’s coverage of international cricket in England and ban Foxtel from participating in any future negotiations. (Anti-siphoning laws mean tests, ODIs and Twenty20s played in Australia and involving the Australian team, must be shown on free-to-air anyway)

Nine could be bluffing to see what ten put on the table. It’s a really smart move by nine, force ten to pay an over high price for the bbl, while they pick up the internationals (everything they already have) for nothing higher than last time.

Just going to enjoy sitting back to watch what happens.

But it could backfire for Nine, even if Ten pay over the odds to get the whole package, then Nine is left with nothing to compete against Seven’s Tennis.

Only problem for ten is there’s a foxtel guy on their board. Will know the terms of the deal and fox sports will weasel their way in.

Then it will be a conflict of interest. The Foxtel board member can (and should) be asked to leave any meeting regarding contract negotiations, and not to be involved in any contract talks.
Anyway, Nine spent so much money on NRL and netball rights, I doubt it can offer much more money to try to grab BBL from Ten.

Fox want in and Nine are cash strapped.

Again with these wretched simulcast deals. I am sick of them.

Michael Clarke has signed with Nine to commentate on the cricket this Summer, apparently quashing rumours he was set to play in the Big Bash League, though he will play for Sydney club team Western Suburbs.

Just saw a promo for Nine’s netball coverage during the NRL telecast. The five year coverage will start with the Fast5 world series, which will be held at Melbourne’s Hisense Arena on October 29 and 30. It will be shown live on 9Gem. Australia will host the Fast5 tournament from this year to 2018.

Sad news this morning with the passing of former Aussie Rules player, cricketer and Wide World of Sports co-host Max Walker at the age of 68 from melanoma. He was also a cricket commentator for Nine from 1986 to 1991 plus ABC, 2UE and 3AK and host of Sunday AFL Footy Show from 1993 to 1998.

STATEMENT REGARDING THE PASSING OF MAX WALKER

“At Nine and across the game we have lost a genuine hero of Australian cricket with Max Walker’s sad passing,” said Hugh Marks, CEO of Nine.

“He was terrific bowler as his Test record shows, but an even better bloke. He will be missed by the whole Nine family.”

“Larger than life on and off the field, a huge character with that laconic, laid-back approach to sport and life. Just a big, cuddly colourful bloke whom everyone really liked - his opponents just as much as the rest of us,”

“Max enjoyed that unique sense of humour made only in Australia, which shone like a beacon in his post-retirement commentary roles on Nine, his hilarious books and his famous ‘have a good weekend Mr Walker’ television advertisements. Max leaves an indelible signature on Australian cricket and its culture. He will be profoundly missed’.”

"Everyone at Wide World of Sports is deeply saddened by the passing of our friend, Max Walker,” said Tom Malone, Nine Director of Sport.

“Max was a pioneer of the industry, making the transition from elite sportsman to television host seamlessly. He was a true Aussie character, whose enthusiasm and love for life was infectious. He will be sorely missed. Max was and will always remain, a treasured member of the Wide World of Sports Family."
